Do you have a missing tooth or teeth? If yes, you likely find it challenging to chew your food properly. Your self-esteem may also suffer as you may feel hesitant to smile. This reliable solution for replacing missing teeth offers a fixed option that closely mimics the look and feel of natural teeth.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

closeup smileA dental bridge is a custom-made restoration that fills the gap left by missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth anchored by crowns placed on adjacent healthy teeth (abutment teeth).

These restorations come in different types, including traditional bridges, which are supported by crowns on both sides of the gap; Maryland bridges, which use a more conservative wing attachment ideal for front teeth; and cantilever bridges, anchored on only one side, typically used for front teeth.

Dental bridges are made from durable and aesthetic materials such as zirconia, known for its strength and natural appearance. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) is also commonly used, offering a balance of durability and esthetics, especially in areas with high bite force. For more visible teeth, ceramic restorations provide an aesthetic and versatile option.

What Are the Benefits?

When you choose to get a bridge, you can enjoy the following benefits:

  • Provides a fixed and stable solution compared to dentures
  • Offers a more natural feel
  • Enhances the appearance of your smile by blending seamlessly with natural teeth
  • Helps maintain proper chewing and speaking abilities
  • More affordable than dental implants

Aftercare Tips for Long-Lasting Results

Proper oral hygiene is essential to keeping your bridge in top condition. Regular brushing and flossing are essential.

Additionally, scheduling check-ups and professional cleanings every six months will help maintain the health of your bridge and surrounding teeth. With the right care, your restoration can last 10-15 years.

What to Expect

Consultation and Evaluation:
During your first visit, Dr Chahal (Dentist) will assess your oral health, check the condition of adjacent teeth, and discuss the best bridge options for you. X-rays and impressions may be taken to design your custom restoration.

Tooth Preparation:
Once you’ve chosen the bridge type, the abutment teeth are prepared by reshaping them to fit the crowns. Impressions are then sent to a lab to create your restoration, and a temporary bridge is placed.

Bridge Placement:
Your custom bridge will be ready in about 1-2 weeks. Dr Chahal will remove the temporary bridge, check the fit and bite of the new bridge, and permanently cement it in place.
